New Electrified Fleet Will Help Port of Shanghai Meet Clean Air Goals

MILPITAS, Calif.--Aug. 24, 2015-- Efficient Drivetrains, Inc. (EDI), a global leader in advanced high-efficiency zero emissions hybrid and electric drivetrain solutions, today announced their newest clean energy innovation - a fleet of PHEV trucks for the Port of Shanghai built in collaboration with one of the world’s largest truck manufacturers, Shaanxi Automotive.

The government of China is currently aggressively asserting mandates and regulations to improve air quality and reduce emissions, putting increasing pressure on city officials. Shanghai in particular is working toward the country’s emissions reduction goals, emulating best practices of the State of California to drive toward better air quality. A large area of concern is their port, where heavy-duty trucks are used to move shipping containers and transfer large crates during shifts that run the fuel engine as long as 20 to 22 hours a day without stopping. The idling vehicles produce noise, fumes and heavy levels of emissions, all of which are eliminated with the use of EDI’s PHEV trucks specifically designed for port conditions.

EDI Hosts California Legislators at Global Headquarters


California Leaders Stress the Importance of Zero Emissions Technology

Milpitas, CA July 17, 2015. Efficient Drivetrains, Inc. (EDI) recently held a discussion forum and open house at its global headquarters and customer innovation center for California legislative leaders focused on environmental impacts and advancements in clean vehicle technology.

With the urgent, rising need to reduce carbon emissions and advance clean vehicle technology EDI hosted the event event to gather industry insights, facilitate interactive discussions with environmental and technology committee leaders, and review market trends and drivers.

The event was held at EDI’s newly opened Global Headquarters and customer innovation center in Milpitas, CA. Attendees included industry leaders such as California State Senator Bob Wieckowski, Mayor Jose Esteves of the City of Milpitas, and Damian Breen of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, as well as members of the assembly.

CEO Joerg Ferchau opened the event, presenting EDI’s vision for enabling medium and heavy-duty zero emissions commercial vehicles. This segued to legislator presentations, discussing the need for fast-paced technology innovation in the area of advanced zero emissions vehicles. Strong support was expressed for EDI’s technology, advanced manufacturing capabilities, and industry leadership.

Senator Wieckowski, chair of the Environmental Quality Committee and Transportation committee member, expressed the need for continued investment in advanced vehicle programs.  The Senator foresees a $4.3 billion dollar savings in public health if greenhouse gases are successfully reduced in the next five years, while also eliminating up to 61 tons of air pollution a day.

Members of EDI’s development team presented the company’s demonstration vehicle projects in a technology tour. Vehicles in the tour featured class 3 through 6 utility trucks, California Energy Commission logistics truck projects, and EDI’s Mass Transportation City Bus.

North American Repower and Efficient Drivetrains, Inc. to deliver first PHEV-RNG Armored Truck


PHEV drivetrain solutions enable zero-emissions driving with full power performance.

Oceanside / Milpitas, CA, June 25, 2015--Two global leaders in developing and manufacturing advanced transportation vehicles have teamed up to manufacture a first-of-its-kind fleet of Class-5 armored vehicles that combine the benefits of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) and zero emission Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) technology.

North American Repower—California’s leading natural gas engine management and conversion technology company— and Efficient Drivetrains, Inc.—a global leader in developing high-efficiency Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle solution—will convert a fleet of six 26,000 pound, Class-5 medium-duty armored vehicles operated by Sectran Security into PHEV vehicles that run on electricity and renewable natural gas—known as “Zero Emission with Range Extension” vehicles. The collaboration supports the dramatic acceleration in California toward a zero emissions environment.

Today, the Sectran Security trucks make frequent stops as part of their highly congested urban routes. At each stop, the engines are kept idling for security purposes, but now risk violating California’s strict diesel idling regulations, which prohibit idling the engine for more than five minutes. With the modernized trucks, Sectran can completely eliminate engine idling by operating in all-electric mode during stop-and-go operations on urban routes and in hybrid-mode during highway operations. When complete, the vehicles possess impressive performance statistics—the demonstration trucks will enable Sectran to reduce annual diesel consumption by 31,000+ gallons, significantly reduce annual fuel costs, and reduce emissions by 99.9 percent. “We’re excited to be partnering with EDI on this breakthrough innovation,” said John Reed, CEO of NAR. “We believe integrating our renewable natural gas system with EDI’s PHEV technology will enable fleet managers to quickly move from petroleum-based fuels to domestically available, cleaner-burning natural gas and electricity. Develops top performing, affordable SUV in response to rising asian market demand

Milpitas, CA, April 13, 2015--Efficient Drivetrains, Inc. (EDI), a global leader in advanced zero emissions, high-efficiency hybrid and electric drivetrain solutions, today announced the availability of an affordable new energy plug-in hybrid electric SUV for the Asian marketplace. Based on its proprietary drivetrain technology, the SUV offers the highest performance for a PHEV in its class.


The SUV market continues to demonstrate explosive growth in Asia and the Pacific Rim, and we consider it a prime, high-volume opportunity for EDI,” said Joerg Ferchau, CEO of Efficient Drivetrains. “We set out to develop a vehicle that goes well beyond consumer expectations, delivering an affordable PHEV SUV platform, with full-performance features. This is the first of its kind in this vehicle class.”

EDI leveraged its proven technology to address the increasing demand from Asian automakers seeking a path to offer a cost-competitive, fuel efficient SUV. The vehicle is a full-size Chinese SUV with a 2.4 Liter engine that has been converted into a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). The vehicle offers an affordable price point for PHEV in its class with full electric capability for over 50 km, making it eligible for government incentives, which further reduces its purchase price.

In addition to cost savings, the vehicle has several other advantages over other PHEVs including higher performance with improved acceleration and torque, lower fuel consumption, and a higher top speed. The range of the vehicle is also significantly longer; EDI’s PHEV SUV is capable of driving over 800km on a single tank of gasoline, a significantly longer range compared to the less than 600km a standard vehicle of the same class is capable of.

EDI’s PHEV SUV can be charged with a level 1 or 2 standard electric plug. This capability allows the vehicle to use about half as much liquid fuel as a conventional vehicle on daily drives ranging from 130 to 160 km when plugged in to a source of electricity every night. Daily drives of 50 km can be accomplished without the use of any liquid fuel.

EDI will be moving into vehicle certification and durability testing next--seeking government certifications in key geographies in Asia. The company is also in discussions with several auto manufacturers for incremental development projects.

Milpitas, CA, February 30, 2015--Efficient Drivetrains, Inc. (EDI), a global leader in advanced zero emissions, high-efficiency Hybrid and Electric drivetrain solutions, today announced the availability of a Class 3 utility truck based upon EDI’s world-first PHEV drivetrain that provides 100 percent OEM performance and 100 percent zero emissions during city and highway driving, while also reducing emissions and fuel use by up to 80 percent.

The vehicle is an industry-first PHEV, built upon one of the most popular Light Duty Class 3 Detroit OEM commercial fleet trucks. It is the only Class 3 commercial work truck in the world that has 30-40 miles of all-electric range and delivers zero emissions. The vehicle also features a series-parallel extended range of 300 miles, bi-directional charging, 50-120 kW of grid reliable exportable power, and enough battery capacity to operate vehicle accessories and job site work tools without idling the base diesel engine.

EDI built their PHEV drivetrain system in response to increasing pressure from the utility industry to green their fleets using electricity as a primary fuel. National, state, and local governing bodies are aggressively advancing regulations to evolve towards a zero vehicle emissions future, prompting many utility and telecom fleet operators to seek out solutions that use electricity as a primary fuel. In response, EDI developed a range of medium- and heavy-duty plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) that offer significant emissions reductions with no corresponding loss in vehicle performance. Continuing that trend, EDI has recently added a light-duty work truck to its PHEV lineup, giving utility and telecom providers access to a wider range of vehicles to meet their needs. EDI’s utility solution set is expansive, spanning class 3 light duty, class 4-6 medium duty, and class 7-8 heavy-duty commercial work trucks.

EDI CNG PHEV City Bus Receives Government Certification

Milpitas, CA, January 30, 2015--Efficient Drivetrains, Inc. (EDI), a global leader in advanced, high-efficiency Hybrid and Electric drivetrain solutions, today announced that it has received certification from the government of China for its compressed natural gas (CNG) PHEV bus.

In partnership with leading bus OEM, Euease, EDI was contracted to design and develop a low-cost, durable, CNG PHEV bus. Built upon the foundation of the company’s proven EDI drivetrain, the new bus will be manufactured entirely in China with local components and EDI control systems.

The collaboration began in early 2014 based on Euease’s need for a CNG PHEV bus optimized for the low-speed, stop-and-go driving of inner-city operations. The project was ideal for EDI’s PHEV drive, which can run in all-electric mode for 30 to 50 kilometers per day and recover energy through opportunistic charging at the depot or en route. Although the batteries are used primarily for propulsion, they can also be used to power bus accessories, such as air conditioning, heating, and power steering.

In late 2014 the EDI city bus took to the roads for certification, undergoing 10,000Km of vehicle durability, performance, and emissions testing, and significant real-life city scenarios. The CNG PHEV bus successfully completed the testing and has received official certification from the government of China.

MILPITAS, CA, December 4, 2014--Efficient Drivetrains, Inc. (EDI), a global leader in advanced, high-efficiency Hybrid and Electric drivetrain solutions, today announced plans to open a Series B round of funding to new institutional and angel investors.  The company has already closed $3MM in funding with early participation from an initial Cleantech investor.

Governing bodies across the globe are aggressively instituting regulations to evolve to a zero vehicle emissions future.  The industry is quickly responding by adopting electrified fleet solutions.  EDI’s plans to seek Series B financing have been accelerated due to the rising demand in the North American market from prominent brands in the utility, telecom, and military industries, as well as increased interest from top manufacturers in the Asian market for PHEV vehicles used in mass transportation such as city buses and taxis.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and Efficient Drivetrains Incorporated (EDI) will host a ceremony at EDI’s plant in Dixon, CA to unveil the utility industry’s first plug-in electric hybrid drivetrain Class 5 work trucks featuring 120kW exportable power that can be used to shorten or eliminate planned and unplanned outages.
PG&E partnered with EDI and Dixon-based Altec Industries, to develop two class 5 vehicles, both of which were designed, built and tested in the heart of California at EDI’s plant in Dixon. Two different models will be unveiled, one, a Class 5 utility work truck featuring 120kW exportable power, capable of powering 80% of the transformers in PG&E’s service area. The second is a Class 5 bucket truck featuring Altec’s electric worksite management system, which allows all onboard equipment including the boom, climate control and tools to be operated off of battery power, eliminating the need to idle the engines of the trucks while at job sites. Both vehicles feature an all-electric range of approximately 30 miles and will reduce emissions by up to 80% when compared to conventional fuel vehicles.  PG&E estimates that each EDI truck will save the utility over 850 gallons of fuel per year

Over 40% Improvement in MPGe with Integration of Intelligent Plug-In Hybrid and CNG

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 30, 2014 – Efficient Drivetrains, Inc. (EDI), a global leader in advanced, high-efficiency plugin hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and continuously variable transmission (CVT) solutions, today announced a high-profile partnership to develop a first-of-its-kind, Class-4 vehicle that combines the benefits of compressed natural gas (CNG) and PHEV technology. 

In partnership with Greenkraft, CALSTART, and the California Energy Commission, the collaboration supports the rapid movement in California toward a zero emissions environment. The effort combines EDI’s intelligent PHEV powertrain with Greenkraft’s CNG-powered 14,500-pound, Class-4 medium-duty truck. EDI’s solution can improve the fuel economy of a conventional CNG-powered medium-duty truck by more than 40 percent.

EDI’s announcement came simultaneously with a grant approval for the combined partnership by the California Energy Commission of funding from its Energy Research and Development Division.  The unanimously approved $900,000 grant, supports the state directive to accelerate research and development of advanced natural gas engine-hybrid electric vehicles for light and heavy-duty applications.

Frank, Ph.D., at the University of California-Davis (the Frank/UC Portfolio). Dr. Frank is a co-founder of EDI, the exclusive licensee to the Frank/UC Portfolio.

The terms of the license to Ford are confidential, but it includes an amicable resolution of all disputes related to the Frank/UC Portfolio.

MILPITAS, Calif., December 21, 2015 --(BUSINESS WIRE)--XALT Energy, a leading developer of lithium-ion battery cells, and Efficient Drivetrains, Inc. (EDI), a leader in developing high-efficiency Plug-in Hybrid Electric vehicle solutions, announced today a tentative agreement where XALT will supply EDI with its NMC graphite Lithium-ion battery energy storage packs for use in the company's PHEV PowerDrive and electric power export solutions. Initially, EDI will use the first generation XALT Energy battery system in a first-of-its-type commercial plug-in hybrid electric grid exportable power utility vehicle, built on a Peterbilt truck platform. The agreement is a first phase of a possible multi-year supply agreement that aims at upgrading to the new XALT XPAND pack battery modules when they become available in 2016. The packs will be used for commercial truck fleet replacement orders.

CALSTART developed the Voice of the Customer (VOC) event for EDI, with funding from the Southern California Gas Company.
